Currently we can use the excellent tooltip options to embed references to official rules, conditions etc. into our homebrew, however we can't do the same for our own homebrew content, meanwhile D&D Beyond does not allow homebrew to be published with "external" links, even if these links point to D&D Beyond.
What I would like to suggest is an expansion of the tooltip feature that allows us to place a homebrew URL between the tags in order to reference homebrew content in place of official content. By default the URL would be replaced with the title of the content, but a custom name could be used as normal using a semi-colon.
For example, if I were to do the following (without spaces):
[spell] https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/624259-acid-bite [/spell]
It would produce a tooltip labelled Acid Bite, which would show my homebrewed spell just like any other.
There would be some restrictions:
- First, the referenced content must be D&D Beyond homebrew of the correct type (homebrew race for [race], spell for [spell] etc.)
- For private homebrew the tooltips would be replaced with a warning if the URL references homebrew that has not been shared with the community, and is not in your collection or created by the same author.
- Meanwhile tooltips would need to be re-processed for shared content in order to remove any references to homebrew that has not already been shared with the community.
In other words private tooltips can't reference homebrew you don't have access to, and public tooltips can't reference homebrew that isn't also public.
