As the Character Builder is set up now, each time you change something in your character's setup, like adding a level, adding or changing a feat or spells, the character is automatically saved with those changes.
A lot of the times I am using the Character Builder though, I am merely using it to plan my character's development at higher levels then it currently is at: considering whether to use the ASI or (checking if I meet the prerequisites for) taking a feat instead. Or maybe adding a level of Warlock to my Fighter.
The fact that the Builder automatically saves after each change makes it quite the hassle, as you have to undo all those changes after you're done because otherwise you end up with a level 12 character in your 5th level campaign. Right now I've got quite the collection of Post-It notes used to plan my current character's higher levels...
That's why I think a Character Planner, either built into the Builder or even as a separate tool, that can be used to plan the next level(s) of an existing character or just play around with classes, abilities and features for a future character, would be a neat thing. That way you can test character builds before committing to them and see if character concepts you have come up with in your head and sound awesome actually work or should be assigned to the Digital Plane of Infinite Trash Characters and never talked about ever again.
A few neat features that could be considered:
- Show (un)selectable multiclass options, feats and spells based on their prerequisites
- Multiclass recommendations based on current class, ability scores, etc.
- Spell recommendations
- Possibility of planning a certain type of character (support, tank, blaster caster, berserker, etc.) and give recommendations based on that
